Only 8,000 people from 1986-1996 died as a direct result of Radiation.

There are definately conflicting reports. Yes, one problem is that 125.000 people have died, and some of them could have died from the long-term radiation effects. However, this is highly unlikely (for example, the radiation can damage arteries, but a life of smoking, drinking, and poor diet is proven to do the same thing.) So there really is no way to know. It is proven that two plant workers, Valery Khodemchuk and Vladimir Shisenok died in the initial blast. 22 other plant workers and 6 firefighters died within the year from the radiation. 4,000 cases of thyroid cancer were from the fallout reaching nearby towns, and 9 of these cases were lethal. It is expected that 4,000 more people will die from the poison but no one knows for sure. At least that's what was in the National Geographic, April 2006.

Argh! Dammit, not 125.000 died because of radiation effects!

As of 1995, according to the ukrainian ministry of health, 125.000 out of the most exposed group have died (of old age, by being overrun by a car, by drinking to much vodka, ...). The "most exposed group" seems to be about 2.2M people, and you can actually expect around 150.000 of them to die within 9 years. You DID know that people sometimes die without a nuke plant nearby, didn't you?

CORRECT TYPOS: The soldiers who did the clean-up were volunteers. They were given a choice on how they complete their tour of duty requirement which was necessary for their retirement from Army. They could either spend two YEARS in a hellish rain of bullets, rockets and bombs in Afghanistan or two MINUTES in a tranquil, silent and invisible rain of deadly gamma rays. Many took the two minutes in Chernobyl.

Let's not get too bogged down in what the damned banner says. The point is that the Soviet government didn't give a rip what happened to the thousands who died putting in this sarcophagus. Let's just forget about the people living around it for a moment, and how many died in the explosion. There were soldiers bussed in from hundreds of miles around who were handling raw nuclear material. Think about how many of those men in the picture are still alive. And realize that it's only 20 years ago.

im not sure about the explosion... but there were about 40 million people that were affected, especially with genetic mutations. The deaths only continue to increase because of such organic mutations in the (ex)heart, there are only a certin amount of qualified "open heart surgeons". Especially with stupid individuals WITH CHILDREN STILL LIVING IN AREAS THAT CONTAIN DANGEROUS AMOUNTS OF RADIATION!! I understand that money is a huge issue, but if its over life and death.......

No, Mr. M.
the banner acually says: "We'll fulfill the task given by the government". I prove it as I'm russian.

30 killed?

Not immediately, at least not due to the explosion. I've heard that 1-3 were killed due to the explosion and over 30 within the next month due to radiation poisoning. No telling what those numbers are going to do over the next 50 years or so.

Posted by Guest on Thu 28 Jul 2005 08:06:26 PDT

:)

There were 30 people killed instantly from the explosion. There were only 3 people working in the control room that night. 2 died shortly after of radiation poisoning

kinda ironic and scary.. the banner they are holdin' says: "We will fullfill the order of government"

I belive that true results of radiation will be known for at least 40 years.
I know that many people who lived at Marshal Islands (U.S. did nuclear testings there 50 yeasr ago) discovered that they have cancer very recently.

There weren't many people in the control room at the time of the explosion or during the routine shutdown. It was early in the morning and only those who were supposed to be on shift were. Many of the casualities came from those who had to work on top of the roof cleaning up radioactive material. They received their lifetime dose of radiation in 90 seconds. Most of the other people who have died and will continue to die as a result of the Chernobyl explosion, will die due to the sicknesses that greater radiation levels have caused; i.e. thyroid cancer (mainly in children),kindney cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, and so on.

there were more like 5 people in the control room. they weren't killed by the explosion. only a few people were killed by the actuall explosion i think, mostly the radiation killed i think...

how many people were killed directly from explosion?

2 operators were in control room, and how many others (people who were conducting testing) were in reactor 4 complex?
